This city (the third largest in Turkey) is
bustling, busy, vibrant. It is lively all year
round. Its long stretch of palm lined promenade
offers a lovely sea views across the bay. The
city slowly spreads up hill onto the slopes of
the surrounding mountains.
There is much to do and see in Izmir. The
original city was establised C3thBC (Bayrakli).
The excavations at Bayraklı have unearthed a
temple dedicated to Athena. There are numerous
museums such as the Archeological, Ethnography,
Ataturk and Fine Arts Museum.
The symbol of Izmir is the clock tower, built
in 1901, stands in the heart of the city. It
was a gift from Sultan Abdulhamid. There are
many mosques the largest and oldest being the
Hisar Mosque which was built in the 16thC and
restored in the 19thC.
